In the best of all worlds, elections are fair, transparent, and well organized. Media and international organisations do their share to support transparency in the elections through observation and coverage. But in reality, elections come with a variety of constraints, and media and monitoring outlets can’t be everywhere.

Sharek961 empowers all citizens to report on what’s happening in their surroundings during the elections.

Sharek961 invites people to participate in English and Arabic through SMS, email, Twitter and web reports on what is happening around the country, from political rallies and polling centres to vote-buying and violence. Sharek961 anonymously publishes these reports alongside news reports, blog posts, photos, videos and tweets, all in one place.

How can you participate?

1-    Use It: Go to www.sharek961.org, read what is going on in other parts of Lebanon, or tell us what is happening in your village, on your street, and in your neighbourhood. Simply report via SMS to 7118 9118 (regular price, non-premium), or go online and discover other ways of telling us what’s going on.

2-    Talk about It: Tell everyone you know: Get 10 people to store Sharek961’s SMS report number 7118 9118 in their phones. Have them do the same. Share us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter (@sharek961). If you have a blog or Twitter account, we’d love you to write about Sharek961.

3-    Volunteer: In addition to sending in reports we’re looking for Election Day Field Reporters for Sharek961, sending in reports from anywhere in Lebanon.
